Exemption Information by State

FAQs

Q: What is a religious exemption?
A: Religious exemptions are used when a parent has a sincerely held belief that prohibits their child/children from receiving vaccinations.

Q: How Do I Get an exemption?
Because each state sets their own laws, every process is different for each state.
It can also depend on the school. Your school may have their own form for you to complete.

Q: Do I need an exemption if I homeschool?
Each state is different for homeschool requirements. This site goes into detail for each state. Click here.

Q: Does this apply to colleges?
Each college has their own requirements for the process of exemptions. I’ll have more to come on this when I finish exemptions for kids in daycare through high school.

Q: Will my doctor accept my religious exemption?

Unfortunately most doctors will require immunizations to be seen. However, there is a list of doctors Dr. Green mom has compiled that support medical freedom choices.

You can request the list here.

Q: What if I don’t belong to an organized church or my beliefs are different from my pastor/priest, etc?
It may be based on an individual’s own moral/spiritual conscience to live God’s Word. These are YOUR deeply held religious beliefs.

Q: What if this belief is new to me?
The law recognizes a person can change their religious beliefs at any point in time. There is no requirement to the length of time you’ve held these religious beliefs.

Q: What if my school says they don’t accept religious exemptions?
If your state allows religious exemptions and your school receives any federal or state funding, they’re required to accept religious exemptions. Kindly remind them of the law and provide your exemption letter or form based on your state requirement.

Q: Can private school reject your religious exemption?
Unfortunately yes if they don’t receive any state or federal funding they’re considered a private business and can make these decisions at their discretion.

Q: What if my state doesn’t allow religious exemptions?
Unfortunately they can’t attend public school.  Most states have homeschool or co-op programs your child can attend. I would suggest to get out to advocate and vote for change! There’s so many local chapters you can join and support.
